Long days running around Haggard Park and soaking up the sun are part of what makes summer fun. While you’re enjoying the warm, or, as is common in Plano, pretty hot weather, it’s crucial to keep hydration in mind. In addition to making you feel tired and thirsty, dehydration can negatively impact your sinus health, leading to inflammation and pressure.
The Importance of Hydration for Healthy Sinuses

Your sinuses are four pairs of air-filled pockets behind your face. When you’re hydrated and healthy, the mucus in your sinuses traps germs and other foreign particles to help ward off infection. If you’re dehydrated, however, the mucus can thicken, causing it to get trapped in the sinuses. When your sinuses clog with thick mucus, you’ll feel congested and experience facial pressure, almost like a headache.[1]
Preventing Dehydration in the Summer
With all the fun summer activities, it’s easy to neglect hydration without even thinking about it. Keep a few of these tips in mind for better summer hydration and sinus health:
- Keep a glass of water on your nightstand
- Drink a glass of water when you wake up
- Drink a glass of water with every meal
- Carry a water bottle with you each day, especially if you’re going to be outside
- If you’re going hiking or doing any other form of outdoor exercise, bring at least a few liters of water
- Drink beverages with electrolytes if you’re feeling excessively fatigued or dehydrated
- Limit alcohol, as it dehydrates you; drinking at least one extra glass of water per alcoholic drink will limit dehydration
In addition to drinking enough water, limit your exposure to heat as much as possible. Running the AC or a fan in your home, sitting in the shade or going for a swim are great ways to stay cool.
