Approximately 60.7 million Americans aged 12 and over have hearing loss. With Thanksgiving around the corner, it’s important to create an inclusive, comfortable environment for loved ones with hearing loss. If someone close to you has been recently diagnosed, take a look at our tips to make this holiday season more inclusive for everyone at the table.
1. Ask Questions
The first and best way to create an inclusive Thanksgiving Day environment is to ask your loved one what they need. Hearing loss is different for everyone. Some may need a lot of communication help, while others only require minimal background noise to understand those around them. Remember to be direct, understanding and compassionate when broaching the subject.
2. Create a Communication-Friendly Environment
Having a loved one with hearing loss doesn’t mean you have to give up a big Thanksgiving gathering with your extended family. With a few thoughtful adjustments, you can make the celebration more inclusive and comfortable for everyone, no matter the size of your group:
- Lower the music. Singing along to holiday songs is part of the Thanksgiving fun, but it can also create a communication barrier. Try keeping the music volume low or playing it in the kitchen while cooking. This way, you can enjoy your favorite tunes without disrupting the conversation.
- Spread out. If you have the space, encourage your guests to spread out and chat in small groups. This simple tip will help those with hearing loss engage in conversations without the excess mental effort required for big groups.
- Don’t shout. It’s very common for people to raise their voices when speaking to someone with hearing loss. However, shouting usually isn’t effective and can come across as frustration or anger, even if that’s not the intention. A better approach is to speak clearly and at a natural pace. Only repeat yourself or raise your voice if they specifically ask.
3. Talk About Hearing treatment
Hearing loss can be stressful, and finding the courage to seek treatment isn’t easy. A gentle nudge from someone who cares may be what your loved one needs when considering hearing aids. Approach the conversation with compassion and an open mind—maybe take them out for a coffee at The Aussie Grind, listen to their concerns and avoid taking over the discussion. If it feels right, offer to join them at their first hearing consultation. Your support could be the encouragement they need to take this important step.
