Head and neck cancer refers to an assortment of tumors that appear in the throat, larynx (voice box), nose, sinuses and mouth. Cancer of the mouth may be considered a type of head and neck cancer. Squamous cell carcinomas is the term used for most head and neck cancers due to their origin, beginning on the surface layer containing flat and squamous cells. Cancer confined to this layer of cells is called carcinoma in situ.  The spreading of malignant cells into deeper layers of cells is called invasive squamous cell carcinoma.

As a resident of Prosper, your concerned about the type of cancer you have but your bigger concern is what might have caused it and the treatments available.  Typically, cancers of the mouth, throat and voice box are linked to smoking and alcohol consumption however there are other risk factors. The latest research has revealed, in the last decade, that most cases of throat cancer diagnosed are non-smoker young adults who do not drink. The head and neck cancers are associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) and when diagnosed are typically at an advanced stage.

Head and Neck cancers and tumors have several symptoms:

  • A lump or sore that does not heal
  • A sore throat that does not go away
  • Trouble swallowing
  • A change or hoarseness in the voice

These symptoms may also be the result of other, less serious conditions. Please check with your doctor if any of these symptoms appear. The specific types of head and neck cancer include:

  • Hypopharyngeal Cancer
  • Laryngeal Cancer
  • Lip and Oral Cavity Cancer
  • Metastatic Squamous Neck Cancer with Occult Primary
  • Nasopharyngeal Cancer
  • Oropharyngeal Cancer
  • Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer
  • Salivary Gland Cancer
