Have you ever experienced a cold or allergy attack that was very persistent? If so, it was probably sinusitis. Health experts have estimated that 37 million people are afflicted with sinusitis annually, making it one of the most common health conditions in America, defacto Prosper. The number may be higher, because symptoms of bacterial sinusitis mimic those of colds or allergies, and many do not seek a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment with an antibiotic.
You may or may not know, sinus problems are different from allergy problems. Allergy problems are caused by the body’s immune reaction to a substance, whereas sinus problems are a bacterial infection, and may occur following a respiratory infection such as the common cold. Prosper residents are not immune to the development of sinus problems or infections. Specifically, sinus problems or Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are the hollow cavities inside the cheekbones, around your eyes and behind your nose. The infection of the sinus cavity can occur when the mucus is blocked from draining normally. People with allergies or asthma have an increase proclivity to chronic sinusitis due to the increased chance of allergy inflammation. A week to 10 days is the typical sinus infection lifespan with the application of antibiotics. Chronic sinusitis is diagnosed acute sinus symptoms that have lasted longer than eight weeks, regardless of treatment. Sinus infection symptoms include:
- Thick nasal discharge
- Nasal congestion
- Decreased sense of smell
- Postnasal drip, often with bad taste
- Pain in the teeth
- Wheeze, if asthmatic
After thorough testing and examination, including skin testing, physical examination, and possible CT scan, the physician will recommend a treatment plan, which may or not include the following:
- Saline irrigation
- Nasal steroid sprays
Yes, surgery is an option but not till all other avenues and options have been eliminated. Surgery should only be considered if medical treatment has failed or if there is a nasal obstruction that cannot be corrected with medications. If surgery is needed, then the surgery type will be chosen as to what is best suited for the patient and diagnosis specific. Surgery can be performed under the upper lip, behind the eyebrow, next to the nose or scalp, or inside the nose.
Allergies can lead to chronic sinusitis, but sinusitis cannot create allergies. The neglect or continued non-treatment of chronic sinusitis will result in frequent sinus, ear and upper and lower respiratory infections.
