Are you suffering from a runny nose, excessive sneezing and coughing, or itchy watery eyes? If you answered yes, then you may be suffering from allergies. You have found the right place, in Prosper, to address your allergy issues.  Prosper is part of North Texas. North Texas was ranked 23rd in the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America’s list of top 100 “allergy capitals” for 2016 and was 17th in 2015.

An allergy is defined as an irregular sensitivity or amplified reaction by the immune system to a substance, otherwise known as an allergen.  The allergen does not produce an allergic reaction or symptoms in most people.   Allergens can take many forms such as: plant pollen, pet dander, insect venom, dust, mold, foods and drugs. Common allergic conditions related to the reaction to allergens are sneezing, itching, nasal congestion and drainage, also known as allergic rhinitis or hay fever. When itchy and swollen eyes are added in, this is known as allergic conjunctivitis. Other known conditions associated with allergies are asthma, eczema and hives.

Allergies have been found to have a genetic link but even with a predisposition to develop allergies, sometimes offspring develop different allergies than their parents.  Some types of allergies start at a young age, whereas others take time or even several pollen seasons to appear.  Some allergies have developed later in life.  The recognition and treatment of allergies early can have an impact by reducing asthma symptoms.

The identification of specific allergies within a patient, a skin test/allergy test must be conducted. This skin test has been found to be effective in the evaluation of both inhalant and food allergens.

As previously mentioned, there are common and less common symptoms associated with allergies, which are no different for Prosper residents, which include:

  • Runny nose
  • Post nasal drip
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion
  • Coughing
  • Itchy / Watery eyes

Less common:

  • Headaches
  • Loss of taste and smell
  • Low productivity/Poor concentration
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Snoring
  • Vomiting
  • Wheezing

If your suffering from these symptoms, you know how inconvenient or irritating they can be, interfering day-to-day activities and sleep. Absences from school or work, loss of productivity, and an overall poor quality of life are because of unaddressed allergy symptoms. Seek the help of one of our amazing physicians and start your road to allergy treatment.

After being tested and your specific allergies are determined, a successful treatment plan can be prescribed. The allergy treatment plans may include:

  • Avoidance of allergens
  • Immunotherapy
  • Medications
  • Allergy Tablets
  • Allergy Shots (SCIT)
  • Allergy Drops (SLIT)

The avoidance of allergens is the most obvious treatment, but the expectation that one should live in a bubble is unrealistic.  There are things that can be done to minimize specific allergen exposure. Pollen and/or grass allergies can be as simple as keeping windows closed and showering immediately after outdoor activities. Allergy-proof mattress and pillow covers are excellent for people with a dust allergy.  Other methods to avoid allergens can be discussed with your physician.

Often, we find patients initially try to suffer through their allergies and let them go untreated. Untreated allergies can be the underlying cause of eczema, frequent sinus, ear and upper and lower respiratory tract infections, and aggravate or cause asthma. Do not ignore your allergy symptoms and let them control you and your life.
